Pioneer Day

by Ryan McLaughlin ~ July 24th, 2008

Happy Pioneer Day everyone!  In case you don’t know what Pioneer Day is, it is a state holiday to celebrate the pioneers who made the trek to settle here in Utah.  It is also an excuse for us to have parades and set off fireworks.

Dry pack canner

by Ryan McLaughlin ~ July 9th, 2008

We finally got the Dry pack canner. We signed up for it several months ago and our turn came and we took advantage of it.

As you know from my previous post we had recently bought 500 lb. of wheat and some flour, sugar, and oats. It all needed to be put into cans for long term storage.

Reunion in Colorado Springs

by Ryan McLaughlin ~ July 6th, 2008

We just got back from a reunion in Colorado Springs. This was my first time visiting that city and we had a lot of fun. We had lots of activities planned and only 3 days to do them all.

We arrived at the Cheyenne Mountain resort on Tuesday evening after driving all day. We were all exhausted and we just wanted to go to sleep. However, someone mentioned there was a swimming pool and the kids got a second wind and would not let us rest until they had a chance to swim. After they were satisfied we were able to go to bed.

Fathers and Sons Campout

by Ryan McLaughlin ~ June 21st, 2008

We just got back from our fathers and sons camp out. We only had to travel about 15 miles from our home to get to the campsite, it is up Spanish Fork canyon.

The first thing we did was setup the tent. The ground was so hard I could not get the tent stakes in all the way. I even managed to bend one slightly before I stopped pounding them in.

Happy anniversary to us

by Ryan McLaughlin ~ June 17th, 2008

It was our anniversary on the 16th. Can you believe that we have been married 10 years? Sometimes I am amazed that Jennifer put up with me for that long. I probably would have given up on me a long time ago. I don’t have any pictures from our date, but on Saturday we had some friends watch the kids and we went and saw the new Indiana Jones movie and then went to dinner. The restaurant we went to is called “The Chefs Table,” it is one of the nicer restaurants in Utah. When I set up the reservation they asked if I wanted any accommodations. Because this is the first time we have ever been to this restaurant I had to ask what they offered. They listed off a few and I choose to have a table with a view and 10 roses waiting at the table when we got there (one for each year we have been married).

Then on our actual anniversary Jennifer made me a special treat and brought it to work. She makes a special something every year. Instead of a rose for each year we’ve been married, she has a vase of treats for each year.  This time she made flowers out of cheese cake and put them in a vase of Teddy Grahams (graham crackers).

Happy fathers day to me

by Ryan McLaughlin ~ June 16th, 2008

We had a fun fathers day, as I am sure most of you fathers did. The kids all gave me presents. Raelynn put together a scavenger map that I had to follow. At the end I had to search my room to find her gift. My first two guesses were not correct but, on the third try I got it right. Raelynn had made me a very nice heart out of clay. Continue reading »

We went to jail

by Ryan McLaughlin ~ June 4th, 2008

We because of our recent brush with a bandit we decided to take our kids to an open house our local jail was having. They had just finished a large expansion project and wanted to let the community come and see. We were hoping to show the kids how bad it was in Jail, but they seemed to enjoy the visit. A late night visitor

by Ryan McLaughlin ~ May 31st, 2008

We were out side last night enjoying the evening when these small birds started swarming around our flowers. At least we thought they were birds. They were hovering around the flowers like humming birds, but they didn’t make any noise. So I decided to go get my camera and take come pictures. It was not until we saw the pictures that we realized that they were moths. Continue reading »
