Learning to ride a bike

by Ryan McLaughlin ~ July 28th, 2008

Keaten has been asking me to take the training wheels off his bike for a long time, but I have been resistant. I did not want to do it because he does not know how to ride without them and he would get frustrated and I would have to put them back on. So I told him that as soon as he can ride Raelynn’s old bike, which is the same size as his and does not have training wheels, I would take them off of his. So we have worked with him for a couple weeks to learn to ride the bike, but as I predicted he would get frustrated about falling down, give up and go back to riding his bike with training wheels.

So last week he came to me and asked again and I gave him the same answer. He asked me to help him again and I did. When we got outside I held the seat for him and he hopped on and off he went. I was totally amazed. I expected the same results as before. So as any proud father would do I ran inside and got the cameras and took some pictures and videos. He fell down a few times, but for the most part he got right back up and tried again.

While I was taking this video he had trouble getting on and off the bike by himself. However, by that evening he had learned to get on by himself and I am sure he will quickly learn how to get off by himself. By the way Keaten will turn 4 in November.

Jaren was a big helper with teaching Keaten how to ride his bike, he also got very excited when Keaten was successful, watch for him to jump up and down in the video.
