Our New Tuff Shed

by Ryan McLaughlin ~ May 13th, 2008

We decided to take President Bush’s economic stimulus money and organize our house a little. Since we are already bursting at the seams we decided we needed to add a little storage space before we could organize. So, we bought a Tuff Shed.

This particular Tuff Shed is a TB-600 and is available through Home Depot. It has dimensions of 10″ x 10″ x 11.6″. It took them about 3 weeks from the time we ordered the shed to the time they came out and put it up. After they came it took about 6 hours to get everything built. Jennifer was nice enough to take pictures of the whole process.

Before they came I spent quite a bit of time trying to get the ground as level as humanly possible. I also put down ground cover and poured a little cement path around the area. I did this for a couple reasons. First, rules in the city require that any structure be built about three feet away from the property line. Second, I needed space so I could work on the fence if needed. Third, I did not want weeds growing out from underneath the shed. It also worked well for the shed builders because they needed to get around the shed to do their work.

The shed arrived mostly assembled. All the builders needed to do was touch up the paint, put up the walls, roof, door, and put on the shingles.

I am very happy with the quality of the building and I look forward to adding a few enhancements. I am going to add a loft, we bought a tall shed just for this purpose. I am also going to add a lot of shelving, a peg board for organizing my tools, and a ramp so the kids can park their battery powered 4-wheeler inside.

I was surprised by one thing. The studs in the walls were suppose to be 24″ on center. Instead they put them 16″ on center. I certainly won’t be complaining about this. Unfortunately, the roof did not get the same upgrade.

There were also some mistakes, but nothing that would make me complain. The only thing I have found so far is a chunk missing from one of the boards and some gaps in the plywood on the roof. The tar paper and shingles cover up the gaps so I don’t have to worry about an leaking and the chunk that is missing is not really big.

If you were asking yourself why didn’t I build it myself and save a ton of money, the answer is very easy. I am not that good of a builder and I would have made tons of mistakes. I am also lazy and my projects end up taking 10x longer than thay should because I always find excuses why I cannot work on it.
