Food Storage
by Ryan McLaughlin ~ May 3rd, 2008
Well we did it. We bought 500 lbs. of wheat. Every time we go back to my parents they load us up with some of their food storage, since it is just the two of them they tell me they don’t need it anymore. I was feeling bad that I was not following the advice of my church leaders or my parents. For years now they have been telling me that I need to have at least two years of food storage. I was also told that I need about 300 lbs. of wheat per person per year. We still have a long way to go, but at least this helps us out a bit. The only unfortunate thing is that if we had planned ahead and bought the wheat a year ago we could have gotten it for $6 a bag. Instead, since we procrastinated we paid $20 a bag.
The wheat isn’t all we have. The two boxes next to the wheat are potato pearls and we bought several large bags of flour and sugar a couple days ago. We also have a lot of other everyday kinds of food like soup, cereal, crackers, etc.
We also placed our name on the waiting list for the dry pack canner. Our turn will come in July. We are going to have to buy about 100 cans to hold everything, but once it is all sealed up it will be good for a long time.
